Boatbuilding Program

The Great Lakes Historical Society is pleased to offer its boatbuilding program, in which participants build their own small boats over the course of several weekends at the Inland Seas Maritime Museum. Participants learn the basics of boatbuilding and learn valuable woodworking skills. Families and individuals alike are encouraged to participate, and while some basic woodworking knowledge is helpful, there is no minimum skill level required. The first session (Summer 2006) was a huge success; six boats were built at the Inland Seas Maritime Museum.

For the 2006 program, we offered two models: a 11'5" rowing skiff and a 8' sailing dinghy. The flyer to the right shows pictures and more information as well as pictures of each model. The two models also are shown in the pictures below.

We hope to offer the program again in Summer 2007! Check back for updates on this page as the program nears.
